Rushing water was harnessed to generate hydroelectric power, with water diverted upstream from this creek to propel generators that produced electricity. The creek became dry, and without this water many cottonwood trees died. A rock dam once crossed the creekbed and channeled water into the intake box here, after which the water flowed several miles along a log flume to a power plant where it was used to generate electricity. Several hydroelectric power stations dating to the late 1800's remain in the canyon, and old paddle wheels, tail races, and spillways recall that era.
