Boggs Lake Ecological Reserve in Lake County, California, protects a volcanic vernal-pool system and surrounding forest about eight miles south of Clear Lake. Seasonal water held by a compacted ash basin creates habitat for rare species, including the endangered Boggs Lake hedge-hyssop and the few-flowered navarretia. The reserve grew from a 1973, 101-acre plant preserve established after conservationists, botanists, and local residents persuaded Fibreboard Corporation not to develop the site. After years of mapping and monitoring showed broader protection was needed, boundaries were expanded in 1984. Now managed by The Nature Conservancy and the California Department of Fish and Game, it is noted as a model of science-based conservation planning.
