Dedicated on February 14, 1980 during the XIII Olympic Winter Games, this ice fountain honors Norway’s greatest figure skater, Sonja Henie (1912-1969), who won 10 World Championships and 3 Olympic gold medals, including her second at the 1932 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid. It was created by Norwegian artist Carl Nesjar, commissioned by Abel Abrahamsen, and given to the people of North Elba by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norsk Inc, Elkem Alcoa, SAS, The Bay Foundation, and Mr. and Mrs. John J. Talley.
