Thocmetony, meaning Shell-flower, was the Northern Paiute name of Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, the daughter of Chief Winnemucca and granddaughter of Captain Truckee, a friend and supporter of General John C. Fremont. She sought understanding between her people and whites as settlers crossed and occupied Indian homelands. Through lecturing, writing a book believed to be the first in English by an Indian woman, and founding a non-government school for Indian children, she worked tirelessly to remedy injustice and advocate peace. At Fort McDermitt she served as an interpreter and teacher for both Indians and the U.S. Military. An exceptional Indian woman and leader of her people, she believed in the brotherhood of mankind.
