Owyhee River Wilderness protects a vast desert canyon landscape in southwestern Idaho along the upper Owyhee River and several tributaries, where deep canyons cut through the volcanic Owyhee Plateau. Created by the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, it is the largest of the six Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness Areas established in the region and makes up 51.7 percent of the wilderness acreage added in Idaho by that law. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management under the 1964 Wilderness Act, it remains remote and undeveloped, with limited access, challenging whitewater, notable wildlife, and opportunities for rafting, camping, fishing, and seasonal hunting.
