Stony Creek Township, about 87 square miles in area, lies in the southwestern corner of the original Town of Thurman formed in 1792. As parcels in the north and east separated off into new townships, Warrensburg split off in 1813, the same year Warren County was formed, and the remaining area was named Athol. On November 3, 1852, Athol was divided into the towns of Stony Creek and Thurman. The population was 913 in 1855, peaked at about 1,250 residents around the turn of the 19th century, and stood at 743 permanent residents at the beginning of the 21st century.
