Nature
Crane Mountain, a 3,251-foot peak in the southeastern Adirondacks northwest of Warrensburg in Warren County, became an important fire observation point in the early 20th century. A wooden lookout tower was built on the summit in September 1911, and a 35-foot Aermotor LS40 steel tower replaced it after its purchase in 1918 and installation the next year. This change reflected a wider effort to watch Adirondack forests from high peaks. The steel tower served through the 1970 fire lookout season, then became obsolete as aerial detection took over. Declared surplus in 1984, it was removed in 1987.
