At Truckee Meadows Ford, emigrants on the Truckee Trail crossed to the north side of the river and continued upstream. Jacob O. Hays wrote on Aug. 30, 1854, that after crossing to the north side, the right-hand road was the Beckwourth route, while his party kept upriver fifteen miles by taking a new dim road to the left and crossing the river twice. East S. Owen wrote on Aug. 22, 1852, just before fording to the north side of the Truckee River, that the road forked, with the left branch being the old Truckee route to Sacramento and the right-hand branch, which his party traveled, being Beckwiths cut off, the Beckwourth Trail.
