Cantonment was the site of encampments of General Jackson's troops in 1814 during a punitive expedition against Spanish in Florida and again in 1821 while he awaited the transfer of Florida to him as provisional governor on July 21, 1821. A grant to Don Manuel Gonzalez, it was a rectangle along the old Indian Trail, extending five miles from Cantonment to Gonzalez.
