The Louis Penfield House in Willoughby Hills, east of Cleveland, is a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian home built for artist and teacher Louis Penfield and completed in 1955. Designed on a 30-acre site along the Chagrin River, it adapts Wright’s open planning, slab foundation, in-floor heating, carport, built-ins, and strong indoor-outdoor connection to Penfield’s unusual height with higher doorways and bedroom ceilings. Threatened but spared by the rerouting of Interstate 90, the house later underwent restoration by Penfield’s son Paul and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It remains a notably personal late Wright design in Ohio.
