Thomas Johnson was one of the first settlers of Newbury in 1762 and was influential in organizing the town and state. He served as a Revolutionary officer, was an aide to General Lincoln at Ticonderoga in 1777, was a prisoner in Canada in 1781, and was elected representative ten times. The location was the site of the town's first settlement.
