Bedell Covered Bridge spanned the Connecticut River between Newbury, Vermont, and Haverhill, New Hampshire, and the best-known bridge at this site was the fifth in a series repeatedly destroyed by floods and storms. Built in 1866, this Burr truss covered bridge stretched 382 feet, making it until 1979 the second-longest covered bridge in the United States. Originally a private toll bridge, it later passed to the towns and then to New Hampshire. After severe damage in 1973, preservationists raised funds to restore it, but only weeks after its 1979 rededication, a windstorm swept it away. Its abutments and pier remain at Bedell Bridge State Park.
