Suwannee Springs, a cluster of at least six natural springs on the Suwannee River near Live Oak in north Florida, became one of the state’s better-known mineral-spring resorts in the 19th century. Developed after Francis J. Ross bought the springs in 1831, it prospered despite setbacks from the Second Seminole War, the Panic of 1837, repeated hotel fires, and the eventual decline of faith in sulphur water as a cure. The main spring rises within a late-1890s limestone wall and flows year-round as hard, sulphur-bearing water. Now managed for recreation, the site is also remembered as the place where Willie James Howard was lynched.
