Folklife in the Upper Suwannee River Valley includes the traditional cultural expression of a community or group, such as foods prepared for a church potluck, games played with a neighbor, songs sung in a community, and crafts passed down in a family. Many older traditions persist there, and new folkways are also emerging. Ivey Harris passes on traditional knowledge and family history by teaching his family how to make cane syrup. Sally Jones’s rhythmic and improvisational quilts are artistically similar to gospel music found in local African American churches. The annual Florida Folk Festival on Memorial Day weekend celebrates the music, dance, stories, crafts, and food that make Florida unique.
