Cape Blanco Light was established on Oregon’s southwestern coast to help ships navigate a hazardous headland where offshore reefs and islands threatened maritime commerce. After John D. and Mary West sold the United States a 47.3-acre tract in 1867, the lighthouse was built over the next three years under Lt. Col. Robert Stockton Williamson, with some materials produced locally. Its history was shaped by the isolation and harsh weather of the cape, which demanded constant repairs, and by long-serving keepers such as James Langlois and James Hughes, whose decades of service and family hardships made the station a revealing example of Oregon lighthouse life.
