Cape Blanco, about four miles north of Port Orford on Oregon’s southwest coast, is the westernmost point of the state’s mainland and one of the farthest-west points in the contiguous United States. Known for Cape Blanco Light, first lit in 1870, it has carried several names since European exploration before Cape Blanco endured. The cape is a broad uplifted mass of marine sediments ending in sea cliffs about 200 feet above the ocean, with nearby reefs and sea stacks that, together with fierce winter winds, made this a dangerous coast for ships. Cape Blanco State Park also preserves the restored 1898 home of early settler Patrick Hughes.
