John Hacker’s Settlement

John Hacker, born in 1743 and died in 1824, erected his pioneer cabin about one mile west of here in 1769. He was the first white settler in Lewis County and in the watershed of the creek that bears his name. He served under General George Rogers Clark in the Illinois campaign of 1778. Hacker and his wife Mary are buried in a small private cemetery nearby.
