Truman Capote lived in the Monroeville home of his Faulk relatives between 1927 and about 1933 and also spent several summer vacations there. Two of the Faulk sisters ran a highly successful millinery shop on the town square, and the third sister, known affectionately as "Sook," inspired characters in The Glass Harp, The Thanksgiving Visitor, and A Christmas Memory. The original house burned to the ground in 1940, and the second home was demolished in 1988. Monroeville remained important to Capote throughout his life, and he returned many times before his death to visit surviving relatives.
