The alumni of Nazareth Hall erected this stone in 1868 in honor of the institution’s sons who died in the Civil War, praising their patriotism and sacrifice for their country. The honored dead named here are David Baker, Van Brunt M. Bergen, Horace C. Bennett, Joseph P. Bachman, George L. Beitel, Charles M. Berg, Eugene F. Clewell, George Lorillard Fream, Daniel H. Fasic, Asher Gaylord, James I. Grafton, John C. Hagen, Pliny A. Jewett Jr., Clarence Kampman, William W. Ladd, David T. Latimer, Benjamin F. Landell, Frank Pott, Charles Ryerson, Edmund A. Shouse, Edwin H. Skirving, Charles L. Smiedle, Christian F. Smith, Charles M. Stout, Arthur L. van Vleck, John A. Whitmer, and John F. Wood. It presents their deaths as part of a cause to heal and preserve the nation, invokes Revelation’s promise that God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and declares that the academy rears patriots in the ways of truth and freedom.
