In 1969, filming for “Adam at 6 A.M.” brought Lee Purcell, Michael Douglas, Joe Don Baker, and a film crew to Cameron. Lee Purcell, just beginning her acting career, was chosen by Steve McQueen to star as Jerri Jo Hopper in the Solar Productions film, and McQueen became her mentor. The movie launched Purcell’s career as a successful Emmy-nominated actress, and many local residents appeared as extras. Michael Douglas, in only his second movie role, played Adam Gaines, a California university professor. Scenes in Cameron included Douglas emerging from an orange 911T Porsche to ask for directions near Third and Chestnut Streets, and Douglas and Purcell walking through the town’s business district. For his work, Douglas received a $3,400 check and the orange Porsche.
