In 1805, John Garwood and his family of thirteen children made their home near this spot, and their activities here were responsible for the town of East Liberty. The village was laid out in 1834, and the post office was renamed in 1836. Fifty yards east stood a mill built in 1808 by John Garwood, which during pioneer days was the most important center in this part of Ohio. The first post office established here was known as Garwood's Mills.
