Buffalo’s principal museum of modern and contemporary art grew from the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, founded in 1862 as one of the nation’s oldest public arts institutions. Its first gallery building, funded by John J. Albright and designed by Edward Brodhead Green, opened in 1905 after being planned for the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. A 1962 expansion backed by Seymour H. Knox Jr. helped establish the Albright–Knox Art Gallery, and a major twenty-first-century redevelopment led to the Buffalo AKG name in 2023, honoring Albright, Knox, and Jeffrey Gundlach. Known for major holdings in modern art, especially Abstract Expressionism, it has also played an important role in exhibition history.
