Burks Mountain in Columbia County, Georgia, rises 474 feet above sea level in the Piedmont, a landscape formed from ancient igneous and metamorphic rock. Its importance lies chiefly in its geology and ecology rather than its elevation. Although the surrounding Piedmont is mapped mainly as felsic rock such as gneiss, schist, granite, and phyllite, soil surveys at Burks Mountain indicate Enon soils associated with mafic or intermediate rock. The mountain also supports a notable Piedmont Ultramafic Barrens and Woodland community, where longleaf pine grows with rare plants including Dixie Mountain Breadroot.
