First Falls, officially recognized as Pumgustuk, is the lowest waterfall on Yarmouth, Maine’s Royal River, near its mouth at Yarmouth Harbor. Its Wabanaki name means “head of tide,” reflecting the meeting of the river’s drop with the sea’s reach. The falls were vital to Yarmouth’s early growth because the Royal River’s total descent created valuable waterpower close to navigable water. Beginning with a sawmill in 1674, First Falls became one of the river’s earliest and most important mill sites, later including fulling, grist, and flour mills. A bridge has crossed here since 1748, linking inland industry with harbor trade, and the restored Native name now publicly recognizes the site’s deeper history.
