Union Col. Frank Wolford started recruiting for the 1st Ky Cavalry here in July 1861. The unit fought in over 300 engagements, including Perryville and Mill Springs. Local recruits included Col. Silas Adams, eventual commander of the unit, Eastham Tarrant, author of Wild Riders of 1st Ky Cavalry, Jarrard Jenkins, killed at Perryville, and James Humphrey, killed at Atlanta.
