Native plants in this region evolved over 10,000 years and are well adapted to the area's unique conditions. They support environmental health by filtering pollutants, moderating storm water runoff, preventing erosion, providing shade to moderate temperatures, and offering food and shelter for wildlife. This garden benefits the water quality of the Upper Choptank River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The Caroline County Garden Club planted it in the fall of 2007 in partnership with Adkins Arboretum, Caroline County Historical Society, Chesapeake Bay Trust, and Choptank Electric Cooperative, Inc.
