Pioneers Col. and Mrs. William Campbell were considered founders of this church. Established in 1804, its first resident pastor was Rev. Thomas Nelson. Early visiting ministers included Rev. Terah Templin and Rev. David Rice. Its first elders were Claiborne Rice, Hugh Martin, and John Bone. Rev. Isaac Bard came as pastor in 1823, and the first church building was erected in 1825 on Martin St.
