Flat Rock Church Cemetery, whose oldest grave dates to 1877, contains the remains of many of the earliest settlers of the surrounding Flat Rock community. Cochran, Dodson, Green, Hart, Liveoak, Stephens, and Turner are among the more than one hundred family names represented there. Many of these people moved into the area in the years before the Civil War and established small farms. In December 1872, they formed Flat Rock Baptist Church, and by 1875 had constructed their first building. In 1895, they built a new church building which, with additions and major remodeling in 1944 and again in 1956, stands just east of the cemetery. As the nearby airport expanded during the 1960s, the congregation slowly dwindled until the property, except for the cemetery, was sold to the City of Atlanta in 1970 and the church relocated as National Heights Baptist Church. In 1986, descendants of those buried in the cemetery established Flat Rock Cemetery Care, Inc., a nonprofit organization to care for the then-abandoned burial ground, and efforts begun then continue toward its preservation and restoration.
