Named for airmail pilot Charles Ames, who died flying in 1925, this was the county's first airfield. It began as an emergency stop on the transcontinental airmail route from New York to San Francisco, which started in 1918. In 1924 a navigational beacon was installed. United Airlines began commercial service in 1934. A school and weather station operated there. The field became obsolete by the 1940s.
