In January 1958, the First National Bank of Brunswick sold its landmark building on Machen Square West to the S.H. Kress Company, and the sixty-four-year-old structure was demolished. The owner of the demolition company hauled the elaborately carved granite blocks to his home in Brunswick and used them for erosion control, where they sat forgotten until two young explorers discovered them. Carol and Alex bought the property in 1994 and, after noticing the elaborate carvings on the massive granite blocks at the edge of the creek bordering their yard, researched their origins and learned that the carved blocks were pieces of the façade of the former bank building on Machen Square. The family donated the architectural treasures to Signature Squares. A grant from the DeLong-Sweet Foundation enabled Signature Squares to carry out landscape architect Jerry Spencer’s vision for a water feature in Machen Square East, incorporating the reclaimed bases and capitals into a unique fountain at the center of the square. The pieces were removed from the Snyders’ backyard, drilled for water pipes, and carefully lowered into place, giving them a renewed purpose welcoming visitors to Machen Square. Captain Walter E. “Bud” DeLong, U.S.N., Retired, who had served at Naval Air Station Saint Simons from 1945 to 1946, and his sister, Wycliffe G. Sweet, founded the DeLong-Sweet Family Foundation in 1998 to support the arts and historic preservation, and grants from the foundation funded restoration work for Jekyll Square and Machen Square.
