The Homestead Bill of 1862 was associated with Hon. Galusha A. Grow of Glenwood, Pennsylvania. A nearby elm grew on the first homestead taken under this act. Daniel Freeman of Beatrice, Nebraska, identified as the first homesteader, brought a boulder from Grow's farm to Susquehanna County for the ovation given to Grow by its people on June 9, 1903.
