This bridge linked Mount Joy and Lititz by carrying the public highway from Sporting Hill in Rapho Township across Chiques Creek, giving travelers a more direct route that bypassed Manheim Borough. It was named for a whiskey distillery at the northern end of Sporting Hill on the Rapho Township side of the crossing, operated by at least two generations of the Kauffman family, including Jacob S. Kauffman and Henry M. Kauffman. In 1855, local viewers familiar with the area were appointed to consider whether a bridge was needed here, and they concluded that one was necessary. After approval, James C. Carpenter completed the bridge in 1857. Elias McMellen rebuilt it in 1874 at a cost of $1,620; a Civil War veteran and later Lancaster County Prothonotary, he built and repaired many of the county's bridges during his career.
