Born in Essex Co., Va., on Feb. 22, 1744, John Medearis served as an officer in the Revolution and also made substantial financial contributions to the cause. At the end of the war, instead of seeking reimbursement, he accepted a large grant in this area, named his holdings “Liberty,” and said that this alone was worth his contribution.
