On Oct. 7, 1863, Confederate soldiers of Maj. Gen'l Wheelers Cavalry Corps fell in an engagement with Federal forces on this field, and this battle between Confederate and Federal cavalry killed Bodie, Evans, Easley, Ben., Crimstead, Thomas, Gilleott, Hunter, H. T., Hoffman, Daniel, Kesterson, Peter, Love, C. W., Lane, J. W., McDonald, and Smith, Wm.; the dead were remembered as gallant and devoted to the Lost Cause, and in July 1874 verses declared that no useless coffins enclosed their breasts, nor in sheet nor shroud were they wound, but that they lay like warriors taking their rest with their martial cloaks around them, sleeping their last sleep after fighting their last battle.
