George R. Stuntz was born in Pennsylvania in 1820 and died in Duluth in 1902. He became the first permanent settler and in 1852 resided and traded on Minnesota Point. He worked as a government surveyor and discovered iron ore on Vermilion before 1870. The discovery of the Missabe Range followed in 1890. He built the Vermilion Trail and served as a forest ranger, ferryman, canoeist, guide, interpreter, observer, essayist, and discoverer. Although he led many to riches, he died poor. The Township of Stuntz, which includes Hibbing, was named in his honor.
