Tortugas Mountain, beside the village of Tortugas near Las Cruces in southern New Mexico, is a prominent local landmark widely known as A Mountain for the large letter A on its slope honoring New Mexico State University’s Aggies. The mountain is closely linked to both the university and local tradition, serving as the site of the university’s Tortugas Mountain Observatory. It also holds an important ceremonial role in the annual Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe, during which pilgrims climb to the summit. That roughly 4-mile ascent, sometimes made barefoot, underscores the mountain’s cultural and devotional significance.
