Mount Washburn, a 10,219-foot peak in Yellowstone’s Washburn Range, is one of the park’s best-known and most visited summits because of its sweeping views across northern Yellowstone. Named in 1870 by the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition for its leader, Henry D. Washburn, it was praised early for its clear mountain air and immense panorama. Geologically, it is an ancient volcano later collapsed by eruption. The mountain became a popular excursion early in Yellowstone’s history and remains a major destination today. Its summit offers views reaching even to the Tetons and includes one of Yellowstone’s three active fire lookout towers with visitor facilities.
