Elkhead Reservoir State Park in northwest Colorado near Craig spans the Moffat–Routt county line around the nine hundred-acre Elkhead Reservoir, created by damming Elkhead Creek as it flows south from the Elkhead Mountains. Built in 1974 and owned by the City of Craig, the reservoir later gained state-managed public recreation facilities when Colorado State Parks assumed that role in 1998. Now administered within the Yampa River State Park complex, the area centers on water-based recreation and the surrounding open landscape, offering fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing while also serving the practical purpose of stored municipal water.
