To the east beyond Caballo Reservoir, the rugged Caballo Mountains were uplifted about 3 miles above the downdropped Río Grande trough along the fault scarp at the edge of the mountains. The lowest slopes are ancient granites. Black ironstone beds lie at the base of high cliffs formed by Paleozoic dolomites and limestones. Elevation 4,390 feet.
