Wild Bill “Pappy” Cantrell was a boat and auto racer who lived from 1908 to 1996. He was a four-time Madison winner, the 1949 Gold Cup winner, and a two-time national champion. He was inducted into the Unlimited Hall of Fame and the Motorsport Hall of Fame. He raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1948, 1949, and 1950, appeared as a stunt driver in the racing films “To Please a Lady” and “The Big Wheel,” and retired to Madison in 1976.
