The first bridge across the Ohio River here, a 20-foot wide metal truss, officially opened to traffic in 1929, with drivers paying 45 cents and walkers 5 cents. In 2012-2013 a new 40-foot wide bridge was assembled on barges, lifted into place on temporary piers, and slid onto the original reinforced concrete piers, and it won awards for its unique construction. Madison was also famous for producing ale, beer, and porter. In 1823, Jacob Salmon established the first brewery west of the Alleghenies, and other breweries included the Greiner, later Madison Brewing Company, and the Union Brewery.
