Alvan Cullen Gillem was born nearby and graduated from the US Military Academy in 1851. During the Civil War, his duties included serving as Provost Marshall of Nashville and later as Adjt. General of Tennessee, to which he was appointed by Andrew Johnson. He was promoted to Maj. Gen. and commanded the expedition that killed John H. Morgan. His last active service was in Modor War in 1873.
