In Rhinebeck, New York, this archaeological site preserves the ruins of the Kip-Beekman-Heermance House, a prominent manor built in 1700 by Hendrick Kip, one of the area's original patentees. The house later became home to Colonel Henry Beekman Jr. and then his grandson Colonel Henry Brockholst Livingston. Though fire destroyed the building in the early 20th century, it remained influential in local memory: Franklin D. Roosevelt based the Rhinebeck Post Office's design on the manor and reused stone from its ruins in the building. Its historical and archaeological significance was formally recognized with National Register listing in 1989.
