Crater Mountain is an 8,132-foot summit in Washington’s North Cascades within the Pasayten Wilderness and the Hozameen Range, where it is the 29th-highest peak in the wilderness. Although its name suggests otherwise, it is not volcanic; its crater-like shape was formed by glaciation, and Jerry Glacier occupies a cirque on its upper north slopes. The mountain is composed mainly of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Hozameen Group, especially Permian to Jurassic greenstone linked to the ancient Methow Ocean, with phyllite on the lower slopes. Its marine west coast climate brings heavy winter precipitation, unstable snow, and avalanche danger, while July through September usually offers the clearest conditions.
