In 1812 Post and Bartlet Hinds deeded ten acres to the county for public buildings. On this site are the courthouse, built in 1854, the first jail, built in 1853, and the second jail, built in 1867. In 1996 the site and everything within it was placed on the register through the efforts of the Society for the Preservation of Montrose.
