Stephen Decatur was born near this site on Jan. 5, 1779. His heroic exploits in the Tripolitan Wars earned him his captain's commission in 1804. He commanded the United States and was appointed commodore in the War of 1812. He was killed in a duel at Bladensburg, Maryland, on March 22, 1820.
