In 1832, settlers in the area between Indian Stream and Hall's Stream, claimed by both Canada and the United States, established the independent republic of Indian Stream. In 1836, it yielded to New Hampshire and became part of Pittsburg, and in 1842 a treaty recognized it as United States territory.
