Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge is a 3,709-acre protected area near Palm Desert, California, within Thousand Palms and part of the Coachella Valley Preserve. Managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, it contains most of the critical habitat for the federally threatened Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard, Uma inornata. The refuge centers on a dune system that sustains this species, whose habitat is limited to these sands and a few other small areas. Because development can disrupt the sand sources and travel corridors the lizards need, the refuge is kept largely undisturbed and is almost entirely closed to the public, except for a horseback trail through part of the area.
