Herman Davis State Park in Manila, Arkansas, is a one-acre memorial site centered on the grave of Herman Davis, a local native who served as a U.S. sniper in World War I. Honored for killing a nest of German machine gunners, Davis received the U.S. Distinguished Service Medal, two French Croix de Guerre, and recognition from General John J. Pershing as one of the war’s leading heroes. After his death in 1923, Arkansans backed a memorial that opened in 1925 and later became a state park in 1953. Its prominent monument includes a granite obelisk and statue, replacing an earlier marble figure destroyed in 1967.
