James Beaty built a sawmill at Crow in 1891 to mill timber on the Grandview plateau and nearby areas. Mules pulled lumber in wagons on an 8-mile tram from the mill to a point just east of here. The lumber was moved onto a monitor and lowered down a steep incline to the Mill Creek ferry, then taken to the C&O depot at Quinnimont for shipment to market. The operation ceased after the Glade Creek and Raleigh Railway was built in 1896.
